AFIELD Study 2022 I The Construction of Ableism, Day 3

CREATIVE PRACTICE w/ Samuel Riera and Renata Carvalho.

Afield Fellows (2017) Samuel Riera (Havana) and (2020) Renata Carvalho (São Paulo) talk about the systems of exclusion and violence within the wider social structures of Cuba and Brazil that are perpetuated by cultural production and communities. Samuel Riera presents ‘Art Brut Project Cuba: De-marginalizing art made outside the established Cuban art system’ working with people with diverse mental and social conditions or who express themselves on the margins of established mainstreams. And Renata Carvalho shares from a paper she wrote titled Art and Representativeness (A arte e a representatividade) concerning visibility and opportunity for trans people.

Led by Chantal Wong, AFIELD Study 2022, titled ‘The Construction of Ableism’, invited practitioners to share examples of ‘ableism’ in their own field of practice and responses to it with a focus outside of Europe and North America. The program aimed to foster awareness about the inherent ableist structures that we live in and perpetuate.
