This page addresses common inquiries regarding the Open Call. If your question is not addressed in the sections below, please use the submission link at the bottom of this page.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THIS OPEN CALL?
The TJA program supports Europe-based practitioners addressing legacies of injustice and violence. We fund initiatives advancing justice through truth-finding, truth-telling, memorialization, repair, and institutional reform, centering artistic and cultural methodologies over purely legal frameworks.
WHAT ARE THE RESIDENCY DATES?
Cohort 1: December 2026
Cohort 2: October 2027
Exact dates will be announced at a later stage and communicated directly to the selected Fellows.
WHICH COUNTRIES ARE ELIGIBLE?
Applicants must be legal residents (including those with refugee or asylum seeker status) in one of:
I AM BASED OUTSIDE THE ELIGIBLE REGIONS (THE US, UK ETC). CAN I APPLY?
No. To comply with the Creative Europe funding framework, the main applicant must be a legal resident of an EU Member State or a Creative Europe associated country at the time of application.
We cannot consider applications from individuals residing outside these regions, even if the initiative’s work takes place within Europe. We encourage practitioners based elsewhere to stay connected with AFIELD’s future programmes, which may have different eligibility requirements.
CAN WE APPLY AS A DUO OR COLLECTIVE?
Yes. While the fellowship is designed for one individual, up to three people (one trio) may choose to share a single fellowship seat. Please note:
IS THE FELLOWSHIP CARRIED OUT INDIVIDUALLY, OR DOES AN ORGANIZATION NEED TO FORMALLY PARTICIPATE?
No, your organization does not need to participate. The fellowship is awarded to, and carried out by, the designated main applicant. For more details please refer to the question above: “CAN WE APPLY AS A DUO OR COLLECTIVE?”
DO MY COLLABORATORS ALSO NEED TO BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE ELIGIBLE COUNTRIES?
No. For a duo wanting to participate in the Fellowship, only the main applicant is required to be a legal resident of an EU Member State or a Creative Europe associated country at the time of application. The secondary collaborator can be based anywhere in the world. The only foreseeable limitation to their participation is the allocated travel budget for the Amsterdam residency. For more details please refer to the question above: “CAN WE APPLY AS A DUO OR COLLECTIVE?”
DO I NEED PERMANENT RESIDENCY OR DOES TEMPORARY RESIDENCY QUALIFY?
Yes, temporary residence qualifies; permanent residency is not required. You must be legally residing in an eligible country at the time of application—this includes those with refugee or asylum seeker status.
CAN INITIATIVES WORKING TRANSNATIONALLY APPLY?
Yes. Transnational initiatives are eligible if the main applicant is a resident of an eligible country and all other criteria are met.
IF I AM BASED OUTSIDE EUROPE BUT MY INITIATIVE WORKS IN EUROPE, AM I ELIGIBLE?
No. Applicants must be legally residing in an eligible country at the time of application. If you are based outside these regions, you are not eligible, even if your initiative’s work takes place in Europe.
WHAT TYPES OF INITIATIVES CAN APPLY AND WHAT COUNTS AS PROOF OF ACTIVITY?
We define “initiative” broadly to include individuals, informal collectives, community-led movements, and specific projects, as well as established NGOs. Legal registration is not required. However, you must demonstrate that the initiative has been operational for at least two years. Proof of this activity may include archives, websites, reports, or public documentation of past work.
CAN A PROJECT WITH ITERATIONS ACROSS MOZAMBIQUE, ANGOLA, AND PORTUGAL FROM 2019 UNTIL TODAY BE CONSIDERED A SINGLE “INITIATIVE”?
Yes. We define “initiative” broadly to include a continuous body of work, whether it takes the form of an established organization, an informal collective, or a series of interrelated projects. As long as the broader practice has been operational for at least two years and you can provide evidence of its continuity (such as public documentation, archives, or a website), it qualifies as a single initiative.
CAN NEWLY FORMED INITIATIVES APPLY IF THEY BUILD ON PRIOR EXPERIENCE?
To be eligible, the specific initiative must have been operational for at least two years.
While many projects build on long-standing individual practices, eligibility is based on the continuity of the initiative being proposed. A newly created collective, group, circle, or workshop would not meet this requirement as a standalone project. However, if the project is part of a broader organization or initiative that has been active for over two years, it may be considered eligible.
AM I ELIGIBLE IF MY INITIATIVE IS TRANSITIONING FROM RESEARCH INTO IMPLEMENTATION?
To be eligible, the initiative itself must have been operational for at least two years. While projects may evolve from research into implementation, the program requires proof of prior activity (such as archives, reports, or public documentation of community engagement), even if on a small scale. A project that has only existed as theoretical research or a conceptual methodology without a track record of applied practice does not meet the eligibility criteria.
WOULD DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING OR JOURNALISM QUALIFY?
Documentary filmmaking qualifies if artistic methodology and community engagement are central. Journalism alone, without a clear artistic and community-based dimension, is not eligible.
WHY IS THERE A 500-APPLICATION LIMIT? HOW WILL I KNOW IF THE CAP IS CLOSE TO BEING REACHED?
The cap is to ensure our selection committee can review every proposal with the depth and care required by the subject matter. The application form will deactivate automatically once the 500th submission is processed, therefore we recommend applying early and monitoring the submission count via the form.
CAN I SUBMIT MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS?
No. Each individual may submit only one application, and we only accept one application per initiative.
IN WHAT LANGUAGE SHOULD I SUBMIT MY APPLICATION?
All applications must be submitted in English to facilitate the international jury’s review process.
CAN I EDIT MY APPLICATION ONCE IT’S BEEN SUBMITTED?
No. Once submitted, your application is considered final. We recommend preparing your answers in a separate document and review them thoroughly before completing the online form.
WHAT DOES THE “VIDEO INTRODUCTION” INVOLVE FOR SHORTLISTED PROJECTS?
The 10 shortlisted initiatives will be invited on 25 June 2026 to submit a max. 3-minute video introduction within 48 hours. We assess content and clarity, not production value; a single-take smartphone video is perfectly acceptable.
WHAT IF I HAVE A DISABILITY THAT MAKES THE VIDEO OR WRITTEN APPLICATION DIFFICULT?
We are committed to accessibility. If access, safety, or disability-related concerns prevent you from submitting a written application or the required video, please contact us via the FAQ form before 08 April 2026 to discuss alternative arrangements.
WILL I RECEIVE FEEDBACK IF MY INITIATIVE IS NOT SELECTED?
Due to the 500-submission cap, we cannot provide individual feedback to projects that do not reach the shortlist. However, all applicants will be notified of their status by 16 July 2026.
As we are unable to respond to individual inquiries via email, we are accepting questions via the form below and publishing responses on this page on the following dates:
Monday, 23 March 2026 (RESPONSES PUBLISHED ABOVE)
Monday, 13 April 2026 (RESPONSES PUBLISHED ABOVE)
Please note that the Open Call is limited to the first 500 submissions. The April update will only be provided if the 500-application limit has not yet been reached.
