Veronika Châtelain
Dakar, Senegal · Cultural Management
Veronika Châtelain is a cultural policy advisor and consultant who works with socially engaged artists, storytellers, and creatives reshaping how the world understands communities across the majority world. Based in Dakar, Senegal, her work centers on amplifying voices that challenge harmful and distorted narratives through art, culture, and imagination.
Currently, Châtelain serves as the Program Director of the Jazz Legacies Fellowship at the Jazz Foundation of America, where she launched a $15 million Mellon Foundation-led fellowship honoring legacy jazz musicians in the United States, awarding $200,000 fellowships, the largest of its kind in the nation.
As former head of the Open Society Foundations’ Global Initiative for the Restitution of African Heritage, she led a multimillion-dollar international initiative dedicated to advancing the return and safeguarding of cultural treasures looted from Africa and its diasporas; pioneering global efforts to restore heritage, justice, and dignity through advocacy and collaboration. For the past decade, she has built bridges across creative ecosystems as an arts leader, public programs director, and cultural strategist, designing forward-thinking initiatives that empower artists and strengthen cultural institutions. Her work has brought her into partnership with the African Union, ECOWAS, the United Nations, heads of state, and major philanthropies, championing Caribbean and African diasporic art as a vital force for truth-telling, resistance, and renewal.
Rooted in visual arts and cultural policy, she understands culture as both tangible heritage and lived story, translating artistic vision into policy strategies that advance agency, authorship, and equity within cultural systems.
Through her consulting and creative practice, Châtelain continues to shape spaces that honor cultural memory, nurture creative legacies, and celebrate the transformative power of art in building more truthful and inclusive narratives.
