Sahad Sarr

Kamyaak Ecovillage

Artist, musician, and social and cultural activist, Sahad Sarr was awarded the 2024 AFIELD Fellowship for Kamyaak Ecovillage, an initiative in the rural region of Fatick, in the commune of Tattaguine, Senegal, to empower villagers through sustainable practices and foster ecological resilience.

In 2018, Sahad felt the urgency to act against the challenges posed by climate change, poverty, and the exodus of youth to Dakar or Europe. He founded Kamyaak Ecovillage in the rural region of Fatick, Commune de Tattaguine, with the goal of empowering local villagers by implementing sustainable solutions, including permaculture and eco-construction. The ecovillage offers training programs for women in soap-making and natural dye production, alongside workshops for the construction of eco-domes. To address local needs, an artisanal bread oven was built, reducing the need for villagers to travel long distances.

In addition to his work at Kamyaak, Sahad launched the record label Stereo Africa 432 and the Stereo Africa Festival, a platform that has become a springboard for young people and a meeting place for artists, as well as local and international cultural professionals.

Sahad’s projects aim to build structural opportunities for the youth, to bring dignity and hope in the young men and women, many who would rather take a boat to Europe risking their lives, than to stay and work locally. Sahad firmly believes in his generation’s responsibility, convinced that today’s actions are the seeds of the change humanity will bring tomorrow.

Sahad Sarr is a Senegalese musician, social activist, and environmentalist. In addition to being the founder of Kamyaak Ecovillage.  Sahad is the frontman of the Dakar-based band SAHAD, an independent music project that fuses diverse genres such as Afro, jazz, blues, and funk.
