El Warcha
El Warcha
El Warcha is a collaborative maker-space based in the medina of Tunis, Tunisia, where local communities come together to create public interventions and urban furniture. The initiative fosters a culture of inclusive design and hands-on learning within public spaces.
Founded by a group of designers, architects, and artists in 2016, El Warcha – meaning “workshop” in Arabic – brings people together around common creative challenges. The collective brings together designers, artists, and architects to create practical projects like urban furniture and art installations, focusing on public participation, inclusive design and hands-on learning within public space.
Projects like a boxing ring in the car park outside the workshop or a two-hour circus show on a floating stage, which attracted over a thousand people, exemplify the innovative, inclusive approach El Warcha fosters.
As the community expanded, El Warcha established itself in Tottenham, north London, in 2018, followed by Lisbon in 2020. Since 2019, the collective has also worked regularly in Nefta, southern Tunisia, and has completed several projects in Davis, California.
