Social innovator, creative strategist, and educator Badruun Gardi was nominated for the 2025 AFIELD Fellowship for New Nomad Institute, a research and action center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia that explores nomadic culture to inspire sustainable solutions for global crises such as climate migration and adaptation.

Founded in 2025, New Nomad Institute is a nonprofit based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, dedicated to researching, developing, and applying nomadic knowledge to contemporary global challenges. Drawing on the principles of Mongolia’s nomadic culture, the institute explores sustainable relationships with nature, community, and land.

Programs like Knowmadic Arts Lab and Steppe Together engage urban youth, international students, and experts in experiential learning and collaborative projects that reimagine socio-political and economic systems. By centering nomadic wisdom, the institute fosters education, cross-cultural dialogue, and systemic thinking, offering alternative approaches to climate adaptation, social cohesion, and resilient futures.

New Nomad Institute

Badruun Gardi is a Mongolian social innovator, creative strategist, and educator. He is co-founder of New Nomad Institute and GerHub, and works to apply nomadic knowledge toward global issues ranging from climate migration to sustainable food systems. Badruun is an educator and mentor of youth and is a passionate advocate of creativity and the arts. He is a Harvard GSD Loeb Fellow and holds a BA in psychology and communication from Stanford University.
